Alessandro Volta is an Italian physicist. He was born on February 8, 1745 in a remote area in Italy, namely in Como, Lombardy, Italy. His father was a well-respected nobleman in the city. Their family highly values education and science. This environment that makes Volta so in love with science, especially physics.
Volta applied to become a physics teacher at a high school in Como when he was 29 years old, and he eventually became the principal of the high school. Alessandro Volta continued to explore on the sidelines of his busy teaching schedule, which resulted to his first invention, the Electrophorus, a device that generates static electricity. Alessandro Volta then started to experiment by burning sparks to explore the environment of static electricity. He was appointed professor of physics at the University of Pavia when he was 32 years old, in 1777. At this university, he met who made him to create the battery. Luigi Galvani is also a physicist.
Luigi Galvani did an unintentional experiment in 1786 by tying a dead frog's leg with a copper hook and accidently touching the iron, which caused the frog's leg to throb. Galvani believed that there was an electric movement around him, similar to lightning, and that the frog's legs contained electricity at the time. However, Volta, who is also aware of the experiment, claimed that frog meat or legs could not hold electricity. The voltage differential between the copper linked to the frog's legs and the iron accidently touched generates the electricity that makes the frog's legs throb. There was a difference opinion between the two physicists. Alessandro Volta then conducted research to prove his theory.
For eight years Alessandro Volta conducted research. Until he came to the conclusion that the electricity came from metal not flesh or dead frog legs. This effect arises due to two dissimilar metals, namely iron and copper from the Galvani scalpel at that time. Volta then made a Volta Battery made of copper and zinc dipped in salt water and connected without touching. Scientists then made improvements to this voltaic battery. This also proves that Alessandro Volta's theory is correct and drops Galvani's theory. The name Alessandro Volta was recorded as an inventor of the battery and the unit of electric voltage uses his name, Volt.
In 1819, Alessandro Volta announced his retirement from research after a lifetime of hard effort and notable discoveries. Volta stayed in Camnago, Como, Italy, where he grew up. Alessandro Volta died on March 5, 1827, in the place where he was born, eight years after announcing his retirement.
